Creative Digital Multimedia

 Definition

Digital multimedia is essentially any website, production or platform that uses a variety of media types (Text, Image or Video). Typically used in synchronisation to implement the aesthetic and mood of the product or website.

Examples

Games (Among Us) - Gaming softwares use a multitude of media to create a finished product. The whole structure of gaming is built on digital media, using SGI graphics and 3D works to create characters and surroundings; as well as text options and 2D graphics for marketing and functionality reasons. In particular I'm looking at a newly trending game 'among us' for its diverse use of 2D graphics and foundation that purely relies on its users. Essentially a murder mystery; 10 players come together as small cartoon characters, 2 of them being imposters who are murdering other players - the aim for the imposter is to kill everyone else, the rest of the players must complete tasks and discover who is the imposter to win. It offers a voice/text chat that will be activated intermittently or can be called upon by players - where you have a 'meeting' discussing the game and trying to figure out who the imposter is within the game. Because of its tailoring towards more contemporary players the whole design through out is purposefully naive and simple making it feel playful in a fairly serious set up. From font, to snippet videos of characters, the whole game uses multimedia in a niche way to please its players.

Streaming Services (YouTube) - Streaming softwares use multimedia in a much more simple way - the product itself is videos and music. Text is the basis to explain all of the media being streamed, offering a perfectly widely variety of media as you are searching through their sites. Im particularly looking at YouTube who make their money from advertisements and data gathering, all of the media used is designed to keep you searching, watching or streaming. Whats more interesting is the social use (comments, message, etc) which takes youtube away from a simple streaming service like spotify and into a social media platform where media can be used in a personal way between exclusive people.

Shopping Sites (Amazon) - Shopping sites have a single purpose: to sell product. But what is interesting is their use of media to achieve this. Apart from the obvious use of images to actually show the product some listing will have videos for a more intimate look into the product and fully reveal itself. Looking specifically at Amazon i see them mainly using different text sizes, boldness and styles to empathise different information that is most important. For example they use a soft Sans font with a yellow background as their 'Buy Now' button - making it seem easy, enjoyable and a happy thing to do. Beyond this it usually offers multi media previews to assure customers the product their buying matches the description given.

Ultimately most sites use multimedia to represent their products, but how they each individually do it is more interesting.
